Shiva-Parvathi idol from Thanjavur traced in Indiana museum - !! but .. !!!

We go to Temples and pray before God  - we have immense faith in our traditions. There are so many beautiful temples all over Tamil Nadu, in existence for centuries.

Though not much of web presence, ThiruPaampuram is a small village in Thiruvarur Dist – Kudavasal taluk.  This place with origins to Chola dynasty lies near Kollumangudi on the way to Karaikal from Kumbakonam.  A famous temple of Sri Seshapureeswarar exists here.  The antiquity is revealed by the inscriptions  dating back to Rajaraja, Rajendra Chozha, Saraboji kings.  Many artists hail from here – famous being Nadaswaravidwan Thirupampuram Nataraja Sundaram Pillai and his son N Swaminatha Pillai.

Hundreds of thousand miles away – otherwise unconnected is the US State of Indiana in the mid-western and Great Lakes regions of North America.

The David Owsley Museum of Art (DOMA) is an art museum located in the Fine Arts building on the campus of Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, USA. It is named  in honour of David Owsley, grandson of Frank C. Ball (one of the five Ball Brothers), to recognize his donations of $5 million and over 2,300 works of art. The museum is home to approximately 11,000 works (mostly paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures).

In 2005, it acquired a Chola-era idol of Shiva- Parvathi from Subhash Kapoor's Art of the Past gallery in New York ~ without realizing that the  provenance papers of this statue are fake, given Kapoor's record. Today’s Times of India reports that US Govt has seized the idol or rather voluntarily returned.  Yet another bronze idol looted from a Tamil Nadu temple allegedly by Subhash Kapoor has been returned by a museum in the US to the country's department of homeland security (DHS) this week. Ball State University's Owsley Museum has returned the Chola bronze statue of Shiva and Parvati to DHS.

Heritage enthusiast S Vijay Kumar, who has helped to locate stolen temple idols in many countries, had located this statue in the museum.TOI in July 2015 had reported that it was sold to the museum by Subhash Kapoor for $100,000 in April 2005.Kapoor had a fraudulent provenance attributed to art collector Leo Figiel who claimed that he acquired the idol from a European collection in1969 -  most Kapoor provenances go back to this year since 1970 is the cut-off year set by UN for transfer of cultural property . “The bronze sculpture of Shiva and Parvati, from the Chola Period, measuring 5 x 12.25 x 6 inches, was sourced illegally from India under the direction of Kapoor and smuggled into the US. Around 2004, the stolen idol was delivered to Kapoor's former Madison Avenue gallery , Art of the Past,” said a DHS release.The release quoted the museum director Robert La France as saying that the department had presented convincing evidence that the work was stolen and its documentation was false. In July, TOI had reported that the base of the statue has an inscription in Tamil that reads: “Thipampaapuram Sivigai Naayagar.”  TOI had attempted to trace this village.

At Dheepambalpuram in Thanjavur, Thyagarajan, the priest at the local Shiva temple, said there may have been such a “pradoshamurthy“ in the temple but had got damaged many decades ago. Though present HR&CE records do not show such an idol, it is possible that the statue was lost or stolen long back from the temple.Vijay Kumar who had helped to gather evidence says that the Ball State bronze's hand and feet had indeed been damaged and a poor repair had been attempted. While it is not yet established that the idol does belong to present-day Dheepambalpuram, the priest Thyagarajan says the temple has 27 bronze idols that are ancient and some have similar inscriptions on their pedestal.

What a sad state of affairs – the idol that should have been worshipped in a Temple built by Kings centuries ago – gets stolen, there appears much evidence to trace it back – yet the authorities who manage the temple do not even know what the Temple should have had.

Temples are religious places – Every temple has its own significance brought by the Lord there – certainly nothing to do with the management – and Officials clamour for obtaining ISO certificates for temples.  As if these are business houses, they have Vision Mission statements.  Here is one certification for a very famous temple : To provide high quality service through safety, security, queue facilities for darshan, ‘annadhanam' to devotees, maintaining cleanliness in the temple premises by office administration.”

ASI should take charge of Admin and maintenance of Thiruvarangam Temple - seeka a PIL

It is a city by itself …. The glorious Thiruvarangam… 21 Gopurams – 7 prakarams …. ~reverred as ‘The Kovil’ by all Sri Vaishnavaites – it is  ‘Thiruvarangam (Srirangam)’ an island created by Coleroon [kollidam] and Kaveri. 

Thousands of devotees prayed at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam on Wednesday [9^th Sept 2015]  and witnessed the consecration of the sub-shrines and gopurams of the temple.  According to officials, this is the first phase of “samprokshanam” at the temple when 43 small shrines and 11 gopurams are being  performed after renovation. The shrines and gopurams have undergone extensive renovation over the past 15 months. The consecration of major shrines, including the presiding deity Lord Ranganatha, Sri Ranganayaki, and Sri Ramanuja and other shrines will be done during the second phase soon.

Centuries-old paintings have been washed out and idols have been “beheaded“ during the ongoing renovation of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Srirangam, reminding devotees of Mughul raids on Hindu temples, a PIL filed in the Madras high court said.

The petition by Srirangam resident Rangarajan Narasimhan wanted the court to direct the Archaeological Survey of India to take charge of the administration and maintenance of the ancient temple recognised by Unesco as a monument of historical and architectural importance. The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam, before which the PIL came up for hearing on Wednesday , said it would be heard with similar pending petitions. It also asked the petitioner to approach the high court-appointed committee to present his grievances. The PIL censured a `partial Samprokshana' ritual conducted at the temple from September 7 to 9, saying Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR&CE) department officials had flouted every possible rule and caused such damage that would take massive resources and time to restore the sculptures, murals and idols to their original glory.

First of all, the Samprokshna was not done for the entire temple, which itself is without precedence, Narasimhan said. Two idols in front of Sri Kothanda Ramar Swamy temple have been destroyed, and an idol of Angadhan has been beheaded, he said. “It reminds one of the past when Mughals invaded India and beheaded many idols of Hindu gods. The idol of Sukhreevan is demolished, and its remains are lying on the floor as rubble,“ the PIL said.

Murals and paintings have been erased as water was sprayed on them at very high speed, Narasimhan said, adding that beautiful paintings of Ramayana too had been damaged. “Under the guise of renovation, there cannot be any arbitrary demolition of mandapams, deities, paintings and structures,“ he said.

Citing replies obtained under the RTI Act, he said there was no written document available with the authorities to monitor the course of the renovation and the process is being done on the whims and fancies of the HR&CE officials.

Agamas not followed properly in Temples ~ Madras High Court

TEMPLES ARE RELIGIOUS PLACES ~ Agama of a Srivaishnavaite Temple is different than a Saivaite Temple. In Tamilnadu there are ancient temples ….

Sadly, the temples in Tamilnadu are managed by HR&CE – who run temples as ‘money spinning centers’…. They charge the devotees for everything .. for having darshan, devotees are made to wait in long queues for long hours – then they introduce ‘paid darshan’….. in some temples during certain hours – devotees cannot have darshan without paying for it…. Everywhere you have differential Queues – Sarva darshan; special darshan; VIP darshan – many more names… those who pay have quick darshan……… is this right ?  - certainly not. 

Most importantly the wealth so begotten from devotees and those donated by ardent beliveres,  do not go to the Temple or to the Lord – but to Govt coffers, only to be spilled for some Govt schemes which are in no way connected with Hinduism.  Temples have huge property – these are not being administered well – you see boards showing defaulters… who allowed them for so many years.  There are encroachments in temple lands and tenants are not paying the lowly priced rents too.  At times, Govt allots temple lands to other schemes ~ none of these they dare not with any religious places !!!

கோவில்களில் ஆகம விதி இல்லை: குழு தகவல்

சென்னை: கோவில்களின் பாரம்பரியம் மற்றும் தொல்லியல் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்த பரிந்துரைகள் மீது, அரசு எடுக்க உள்ள நடவடிக்கையை தெரிவிக்கும்படி, சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளது.

ஆங்கில நாளிதழ் ஒன்றில், 'பழமையான கோவில்களின் புராதனத்தை பாதுகாக்க, 17 உறுப்பினர்கள் அடங்கிய குழுவை, தமிழக அரசு அமைக்கவில்லை' என, செய்தி வெளியானது.

புராதன பாதுகாப்பு சங்கம்:

இந்த செய்தியின் அடிப்படையில், உயர் நீதிமன்றம் தானாக முன்வந்து, வழக்கை விசாரணைக்கு எடுத்தது. சென்னை, திருவொற்றியூரில் உள்ள, தியாகராஜ சுவாமி கோவிலின் புராதன கட்டடத்தை பாதுகாக்க கோரி, புராதன பாதுகாப்பு சங்கமும் மனு தாக்கல் செய்தது. மேலும், 'மத விழாக்கள், கோவில் செயல்பாடுகளில், அரசு தலையிடக் கூடாது; மகா கும்பாபிஷேகம் என்ற பெயரில், கோவிலின் புராதன மதிப்பை அழித்து விடக்கூடாது' என, கூறப்பட்டது.

இந்த வழக்கை விசாரித்த, சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்ற தலைமை நீதிபதி அடங்கிய அமர்வு, கோவில்கள் மற்றும் தொல்லியல் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த இடங்களை ஆய்வு செய்து, அறிக்கை அளிக்க, மூத்த வழக்கறிஞர் பி.எஸ்.ராமன் தலைமையில் குழுவை நியமித்தது.இந்தக் குழு, மகாபலிபுரம், திருவல்லிக்கேணி பார்த்தசாரதி கோவில், திருவொற்றியூர் தியாகராஜ சுவாமி கோவில் (வடிவுடை அம்மன்) ஆகியவற்றை பார்வையிட்டு, இடைக்கால அறிக்கையை தாக்கல் செய்தது.

அனைத்து கோவில்களையும் பார்வையிட்டு அறிக்கை தாக்கல் செய்ய, போதுமான நேரம் இல்லாததால், முக்கியமான மூன்று இடங்கள் மட்டும், மாதிரியாக எடுக்கப்பட்டதாக குழு தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

குழு அளித்த அறிக்கையில் கூறியிருப்பதாவது:  இந்த கோவில்களில், தினசரி பூஜைகள், வழிபாடுகள் நடக்கின்றன. கோவில்களில் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும் புனரமைப்பு, பழுது பார்க்கும் பணிகள் ஆகம விதிகளின்படி நடக்கவில்லை. எழுத்துக்கள், சிற்பங்கள் பொறிக்கப்பட்ட பழமைவாய்ந்த கற்கள் அகற்றப்பட்டு, 'டைல்ஸ்' கற்களாக மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளன. 'எனாமல்' வர்ணம் பூசப்பட்டுள்ளது. கோபுரம் அருகில் தண்ணீர் தொட்டி, கோவில் வளாகத்தில், நிர்வாக அதிகாரிக்கான அலுவலகம் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. கோவில் புனரமைப்பு பணிகள், விதிகளின்படி நடக்கவில்லை. இவ்வாறு அறிக்கையில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கோவில் புனரமைப்பு பணி:

இந்த அறிக்கையை பரிசீலித்த, தலைமை நீதிபதி எஸ்.கே.கவுல், நீதிபதி சிவஞானம் அடங்கிய அமர்வு பிறப்பித்த உத்தரவு: கோவில் புனரமைப்பு பணிகளில், நிபுணர்கள் இருந்தாலும், அவர்களிடம் ஆலோசிக்கவில்லை என, குழு தெரிவித்துள்ளது. அனைத்து அம்சங்களையும் கண்காணிக்க, உயர்மட்டக் குழுவை அமைக்கவும், பரிந்துரை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

எனவே, குழு அளித்த பரிந்துரைகள் மீது, அரசு என்ன நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க உள்ளது என்பதை, எங்களுக்கு தெரியப்படுத்த வேண்டும். அதை அமல்படுத்துவதில், தடங்கல் உள்ளதா என்பதையும் தெரிவிக்க வேண்டும்.விசாரணை, அக்., 14ம் தேதிக்கு, தள்ளி வைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த விஷயத்தில் தெளிவு பெற்ற மூத்த அதிகாரி ஒருவர், விசாரணையின் போது, உடன் இருக்க வேண்டும்.இவ்வாறு நீதிபதிகள் உத்தரவிட்டனர்.

Devotees  flock to Temples on important days – be it days of religious significance or days of value for the individuals… We believe in God and when we place ourselves before the God with full faith ~ sure all our difficulties will vanish – just as the mist vanishes in Sun…………

Very happy to read this report in Dinamalar stating that HR&CE has given oral orders to temples to abolish special darshan fees.  When or whether that will be implemented remains to be seen !!!!

ஸ்ரீரங்கம், மதுரை, பழநி உட்பட, 234 கோவில்களில், சிறப்பு கட்டண தரிசன முறையை, தமிழக அரசு விரைவில் ரத்து செய்ய உள்ளதாக, தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது.

தமிழகம் முழுவதும், 38 ஆயிரம் கோவில்கள், அறநிலையத் துறை நிர்வாகத்தில் உள்ளன. இதில், 4,000 கோவில்கள் அதிக வருவாய் உடையவை. இவற்றில், 234 கோவில்களில், சுவாமி தரிசனம் செய்ய பக்தர்களிடம் இருந்து, 5 ரூபாய் முதல் 250 ரூபாய் வரை, சிறப்பு நுழைவு கட்டணம் வசூலிக்கப்படுகிறது.

2013ம் ஆண்டு...: 

சுவாமியை தரிசனம் செய்ய கட்டணம் வசூலிப்பது, பக்தர்களிடம் அதிருப்தியை ஏற்படுத்துவதாக உள்ளது. கடந்த, 2013ல், பக்தர் ஒருவர் தொடர்ந்த வழக்கில், உயர் நீதிமன்ற மதுரை கிளை பிறப்பித்த உத்தரவு காரணமாக, 142 கோவில்களில் சிறப்பு கட்டண தரிசன முறையை அறநிலையத் துறை அதிகாரிகள் தற்காலிகமாக ரத்து செய்தனர்.இதற்கான உத்தரவு எழுத்துவடிவில் இல்லாததால், அடுத்த சில மாதங்களிலேயே, கட்டண வசூல் மீண்டும் துவங்கியது. இந்நிலையில், சிறப்பு கட்டண தரிசனத்தை ரத்து செய்ய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படுவதாக, தகவல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது.

அரசு ஏற்பு:  இதுகுறித்து, அறநிலையத் துறை அதிகாரி ஒருவர் கூறியதாவது: ஸ்ரீரங்கம், மதுரை, பழநி உள்ளிட்ட, 234 கோவில்களில் சிறப்பு கட்டண தரிசன முறையை ரத்து செய்வது குறித்து, தமிழக அரசுக்கு பரிந்துரை செய்யப்பட்டுஉள்ளது. இதை தமிழக அரசும் ஏற்றுக் கொண்டுள்ளது. விரைவில், இதற்கான அரசாணை பிறப்பிக்கப்படும். இது ரத்தானால் கோவில்களில், அனைவருக்கும் ஒரே தரிசன முறை அமலுக்கு வரும். இதனால், கட்டண அடிப்படையில் பக்தர்களை பிரித்து பார்ப்பது முடிவுக்கு வரும்.இவ்வாறு, அவர் கூறினார்.

Cantonment land encroached by Church and ordered to be evicted by Madras High Court

Often it is projected that there are roadside temples ! ~ here is something on a Church coming up on a site belonging to Cantonment Board – Madras High Court ordering eviction and yet there are protests. You can read for yourself the way in which it got reported in Times of India; Dinakaran and Dinamalar….

~ and so called Secularists will remain silent on such issues !!!

CHENNAI: Madras high court has directed Chennai city commissioner of police to render assistance to the Cantonment Board in retrieving an encroached piece of land, which had been given to the civil supplies authorities to construct a ration shop for the locality in St Thomas Mount.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh, passing orders on a PIL filed by N Irudayaraj of St Thomas Mount on Wednesday, said: "Chief executive officer of the cantonment board has been reportedly addressing communication to police authorities to provide police protection to remove the encroachment, and build a ration shop on the lands belonging to the government. There is apparently no response from police authorities. We thus direct the commissioner of police to render assistance to cantonment board as and when sought, with advance notice of seven days."

According to A Sirajudeen, counsel for Irudayaraj, the ration shop was meant to cater to the needs of more than 500 families in Sevenwells Street area in St Thomas Mount. As the shop had to be shifted, civil supplies authorities approached Cantonment Board to allot a suitable place to locate the shop. It later identified a one-ground site in the vicinity, and addressed a letter to the Board to build a structure and let it out to the civil supplies department.

In June 2013, however, one Bakya Regis of St Patrick Church erected a flag pole in the middle of the plot, and attached an idol too. Despite claims and representations from Cantonment Board stating that the land belonged to it, the encroacher did not remove the pole, Sirajudeen said. In November 2013, authorities started digging work after the squatter removed the pole. A while later, he again occupied the plot.

The present PIL was filed after unsuccessful attempts to vacate the encroacher, and it wanted the court to direct the Cantonment Board to remove all encroachments made by Bakya Regis, and hand over the plot to civil supplies authorities for construction of a ration shop building.

சென்னை: சென்னை புனித தாமஸ் மலைப்பகுதியில் உள்ள அந்தோணியார் கோயில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது. கண்டோன்மென்ட் பகுதியில் கட்டப்பட்ட 120 ஆண்டு பழமையான கோயில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது. நீதிமன்ற உத்தரவுப்படி அனுமதியின்றி கட்டப்பட்ட கோயில் இடிக்கப்பட்டது என அதிகாரிகள் தகவல் அளித்துள்ளனர். அந்தோணியார் கோயிலை இடிக்க வந்த அதிகாரிகளுடன் மக்கள வாக்குவாதத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். கொடிமரம் உள்ளிட்டவற்றை அப்புறப்படுத்திய அதிகாரிகளுடன் மக்கள் கடும் வாக்குவாதத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர்.

Sri Parthasarathi Kovil admin again - removal of old stones and laying granites !!!

Unlikely to have any impact on HR&CE or its highhanded officials – incidentally – neither the big board in front of the temple nor the temple almanac of the year 2015-16, released recently make any mention of the “Balalayam” and the works going on inside the Temple.  Are they not official ??

கோவில் மூலவர் சன்னிதிக்கு செல்லும் வழியில், துவார பாலகர் அமைந்துள்ள மண்டபத்தின் தரைப்பகுதியில், மிகப்பெரிய கருங்கல் கற்கள் பதிக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தன. தற்போது, அந்த கற்களை அகற்றிவிட்டு, மார்பிள் கற்கள் பதிக்கும் பணி நடந்து வருகிறது.

இதுகுறித்து, கோவில் ஊழியர்கள் மற்றும் பக்தர்கள் கூறியதாவது: மண்டபத்தின் தரையில் பதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கற்கள், மிகவும் பழமையானவை. ஆழ்வார்கள் அந்த இடத்தில் அமர்ந்து, பாசுரம் பாடியுள்ளனர். பெரிய மகான்கள் எல்லாம் வந்து சென்ற இடம். அந்த தரையில் அமர்ந்தாலே, மனதில் அமைதி உருவாகும்.தரை எவ்வித சேதமும் அடையாத நிலையில், கோவில் நிர்வாகம், தேவையின்றி அந்த கற்களை பெயர்த்தெடுத்துவிட்டு, மார்பிள் கற்களை பதிக்கிறது.பழைய தரையில் நடக்கும்போது, கால்களுக்கு 'அக்குபஞ்சர்' சிகிச்சை அளித்ததுபோல், இதமாக இருக்கும். அவற்றை அகற்றிவிட்டு, மார்பிள் பதிக்கும்போது, முதியோர் நடக்க முடியாமல், சிரமப்படும் நிலை ஏற்படும்.

தேவையின்றி, யாரோ சிலர் தரையை மாற்ற பணம் தருகின்றனர் என்பதற்காக, கோவிலின் புனிதத்தை சிதைக்கின்றனர். மார்பிள் கற்களுக்கு பதில், பழைய கருங்கல் கற்களை பதிக்க, கோவில் நிர்வாகம் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும்.இவ்வாறு, பக்தர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

சமத்துவ மக்கள் கட்சி தலைவர் சரத்குமார் வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கையில் கூறி இருப்பதாவது:–

திராவிடர் கழகம் சார்பில் கடந்த வாரம் இயற்றப்பட்ட தீர்மானங்களுள் ஒன்றாக, வரும் ஏப்ரல் 14–ம் தேதியன்று தாலி அகற்றும் நிகழ்ச்சியையும், மாட்டுக்கறி விருந்தையும் நடத்துவது என்று விபரீதமான தீர்மானத்தை நிறைவேற்றி இருக்கிறார்கள். இதை தொடர்ந்து ஊடகங்களிலும், இவை குறித்த தகவல்களை தொடர்ந்து தெரிவித்து வருகிறார்கள்.

பகுத்தறிவு என்ற பெயரில் இவர்கள் பரப்பிவரும் தகவல்கள், நடத்திவரும் நாடகங்கள் நாங்களும் இருக்கிறோம் என்று காட்டிக்கொள்வதற்காக மட்டுமே தவிர, அவை வெறும் கேலிக்கூத்துகள் தான் என்றே மக்கள் மனதில் சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன.

மகாராஷ்டிரா மாநிலத்தில் மாட்டிறைச்சிக்கு தடை விதித்து இருக்கிறார்கள், தமிழகத்தில் அத்தகைய தடை விதிக்கப்படவில்லை. எனவே அதை கண்டித்து தமிழகத்தில் மாட்டுக்கறி விருந்து நடத்துவது இவர்கள் மாட்டுக்கறி உண்பதற்கும், விளம்பரத்திற்கும் ஒரு காரணமே தவிர வேறில்லை. எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவிப்பவர்கள் மகாராஷ்டிரா மாநிலத்திற்கு சென்று கறி விருந்து நடத்தலாமே! இந்தியா முழுவதும் மான் கறிக்கு கூடத்தான் தடை இருக்கிறது. இவர்கள் மான்கறி விருந்து சாப்பிட முன்வரலாமே!

இது ஒருபுறமிருக்க, திருமணத்தின் போது பெண்கள் அணியும் தாலி பற்றிய சர்ச்சையை உருவாக்கி, “தாலி அகற்றும் நிகழ்ச்சி” என்று மற்றொரு வேதனையான நிகழ்ச்சியை அரங்கேற்றம் செய்ய இருக்கிறார்கள்.  உலகெங்கிலும் திருமண நிகழ்வுகளின் போது மணமக்களுக்கு திருமண நினைவுச்சின்னம் அணிவிக்கப்பட்டு வருவது மரபு. கிருஸ்தவர்களுக்கு மோதிரம், தாலி, இஸ்லாமியருக்கு கருகமணி, இந்துக்களுக்கு தாலி என்பன போன்ற சின்னங்கள் பெண்களுக்கு அணிவிக்கப்பட்டு வருகின்றன. தாலியோ, கருகமணியோ, மோதிரமோ ஒரு அடையாளம் தானே தவிர, ஒரு பெண்ணை அடிமைப்படுத்துவதற்காக ஆண்கள் உபயோகப்படுத்தும் அஸ்திரம் என்பது வேண்டுமென்றே பரப்பப்படும் பசப்புரைகள்.

எனவே, தாலிக்கு எதிராக திராவிடர் கழகம் சொல்லிவரும் கருத்துக்களும், மேற்கொண்டுவரும் நிகழ்வுகளும் காலம் காலமாக மதித்துவரும் தமிழக பெண்களின் உணர்வுகளுக்கும், நம்பிக்கைகளுக்கும் களங்கம் கற்பிப்பதாகும். எனவே, தாலியறுக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சி என்பது இந்துக்களுக்கு எதிரானது மட்டுமல்ல, கிருஸ்தவ, இஸ்லாமிய இனத்தவர்க்கும் எதிரானதும் கூட என்றே கருதலாம். இத்தகைய நிகழ்வுக்கு இந்து மதம் சார்ந்த பெண்கள் அல்லாது இஸ்லாமிய, கிருஸ்தவ பெண்களும் எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவிப்பார்கள் என்பது உறுதி.

சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் தாலி பற்றிய குறிப்புகள் இல்லை. எனவே, தாலி என்பது தமிழர் கலாச்சாரம் சார்ந்தது இல்லை என்ற வாதம் ஏற்புடையது அல்ல. சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் பகுத்தறிவு என்னும் கடவுள் எதிர்ப்பு என்பதும் கூட இல்லைதான். நீங்கள் கடவுள் எதிர்ப்பு என்பதை வைத்து அமைப்பு நடத்தவில்லையா? சங்கஇலக்கியத்தில் கம்ப்யூட்டர் கிடையாது, கார் கிடையாது, விமானம் கிடையாது என்பதற்காக அவற்றையெல்லாம் தற்போது உபயோகப்படுத்தாமல் இருக்கச்சொல்கிறீர்களா?

தாலி கட்டுவதும், அதை புனிதமாக கருதுவதும் காலங்காலமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட ஒன்று. எனவே, தாலியை பற்றி அவதூறு பரப்புவது தமிழினத் தாய்க்குலத்தை திராவிடர் கழகம் இழிவுபடுத்தும் செயல் என்ற வகையில் கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது. தமிழக அரசு ”தாலிக்குத் தங்கம்” என்று ஏழைப்பெண்களுக்கு நலத்திட்ட உதவிகள் வழங்கி வருகிறது. இத்திட்டம் தவறு, கூடாது என்று திராவிடர் கழகம் போராடத்தயாரா?

வாழ்க்கை முறையில் பல்வேறு சம்பிரதாயங்கள் பிரிக்க முடியாத சடங்குகளாக மாறிவிடுவது உண்மை. அந்த வகையில் தாலியும் அது சார்ந்த புனிதமும், நம்பிக்கையும் தமிழர் வாழ்வோடு ஒன்றிவிட்ட ஒன்றுதான்.  அதை கேலி பொருளாக்கி திராவிடர் கழகம் தமிழக தாய்மார்களின் மனங்களை, தமிழர்களின் இதயங்களை புண்படுத்துவதை நிறுத்திக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். இல்லையேல் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் தாய்க்குலத்தை ஒன்று திரட்டி திராவிடர் கழகத்திற்கெதிரான போராட்டத்தை சமத்துவ மக்கள் கட்சி நடத்தும் என்பதை தெரிவித்துக்கொள்கிறேன். மக்களுக்கு தேவையான பயனுள்ள போராட்டங்களில் திராவிடர் கழகத்தின் தலைவரும், அனுபவமிக்க தலைவருமான கி.வீரமணி தனது கவனத்தையும் முயற்சிகளையும் திசை திருப்பிட வேண்டுகிறேன்.

Shri Narendra Modji visits Keerimalai Naguleswaram Temple at Jaffna

Keerimalai Naguleswaram temple, historically known also as the Thirutambaleswaram Kovil of Keerimalai, is a famous Hindu temple in Keerimalai, located north of Jaffna, Northern Province, Sri Lanka near the ancient port of Kankesanthurai. One of the oldest shrines of the region, it is the northernmost shrine on the island of the five ancient Iswarams of Lord Siva, venerated by Hindus across the world from classical antiquity.

Its adjacent water tank, the Keerimalai Springs, is believed to have curative properties. Keerimalai is 50 feet above sea level, and situated west of Palaly. The fresh water comes from an underground spring source. Hindus flock in large numbers on “Aadi Amaavaasai” day which falls during the Tamil month of “Aadi”, to carry out rituals for their forefathers and take a divine dip in the natural springs.

Today Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji made a historic visit to Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka, a region once ravaged by strife.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for equitable development and respect for all citizens in the island nation.

Shri Modiji visited the temple and has posted photos on his site.  Winding up his public engagements on his two-day trip to the island with a hugely-symbolic visit to Tamil-dominated Jaffna, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, he said he was glad that it "is one to wipe tears from the eyes of those who suffered".

The Prime Minister, who is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the region, handed over 27,000 new homes to Tamils who became homeless during the civil war. The houses were built with Indian assistance as part of India's efforts to help in the reconciliation process.

Is USA a neutral or a religious Nation ?  - Over the years, numerous scholars, historians, lawyers, and judges have debunked the “Christian nation” myth. Yet it persists. Does it have any basis in American history? Why is the myth so powerful? What psychological need does it fill?  The Text of the Constitution does Not Say the United States Is a Christian Nation. 

George Washington is the author of one of the great classics of religious liberty—the letter to Touro Synagogue (1790). In this letter, Washington assures America’s Jews that they would enjoy complete religious liberty—not mere toleration—in the new nation. He outlines a vision not of a Christian nation but of a multi-faith society where all are free to practice as they will !

Immediately after returning from India, where President Barack Obama was the Chief guest in Republic Day parade,  said religious intolerance in India would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi. In his National Prayer Breakfast address in Washington, Mr. Obama said that India was “full of magnificent diversity – but a place where, in past years, religious faiths of all types have, on occasion, been targeted by other peoples of faith, simply due to their heritage and their beliefs.”

Before delivering sermons to India, it would appropriate to keep their house in order – there have been attacks in Hindu places of worship – now here is some more news from Idaho.   Here is a report that appeared in The Hindu today :  For the first time the opening prayer for the Idaho state senate was said on Tuesday by a Hindu cleric amid protests by some senators who claimed the United States was a Christian nation and denounced Hinduism, local media reported. Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed, who said the prayer in Sanskrit and English, made a call for the legislators to “act selflessly without any thought of personal profit” because “selfish action imprisons the world.”

He was invited by Senate President Pro-Tem Brent Hill to be a guest chaplain and deliver the invocation which is usually made by a Christian chaplain at the start of the day’s legislative session in Boise. According to The Idaho Statesman, when protests were made before the session, Mr. Hill said: “I reviewed the prayer. It did not seem offensive in any way.” He added: “It refers to ‘deity supreme’.” Senator Steve Vick, who walked out of the Senate chamber before Mr. Zed’s invocation said that Hindu prayers should not be allowed because the U.S. was “built on the Judeo-Christian, not only religion, but work ethic, and I don’t want to see that undermined”, the Statesman reported. Hindus “have a caste system,” he added. “They worship cows.”

He was one of the three Republican senators to boycott the prayer. Senator Sheryl Nuxoll said she boycotted Mr. Zed’s prayer because she believed the United States is a Christian nation and “Hindu is a false faith with false gods,” according to the newspaper. But Mr. Hill, who is also a Republican, told the Statesman, “In my mind, you either believe in religious freedom or you don’t... We have had Jewish prayers, many denominations of Christian prayers.”

The Statesman quoted Mr. Zed as saying of the protests: “We don’t mind. Hinduism is more embracing.” KTVB-TV said that Mr. Zed noted “that most of the legislators welcomed him warmly” and said, “We all have different viewpoints, and that is wonderful, that is what makes our country great.” He added: “We are all looking for the truth. If we can join our resources together, we can reach there faster.” Senators from both the Republican Party, which controls the Senate, and the Democratic Party shook the saffron-clad Mr. Zed’s hand and thanked him for coming, the Statesman said.

The U.S. does not have an official religion and the secular constitution prescribes strict separation of religion and state. However, federal and state legislatures open their sessions with prayers, even though prayers are prohibited in government schools because of the constitutional injunction. In 2000, Venkatachalapathi Samuldrala of Shiva Hindu Temple in Parma, Ohio, made the opening invocation in the House of Representatives in Washington. Mr. Zed said the opening prayers at the federal Senate in 2007 when it was disrupted by protesters from the public gallery.

Idaho borders Washington State, where two Hindu temples were vandalised last month. The second attack occurred the same week that an influential Christian fundamentalist preacher, Pat Robertson, said on his TV show that Hindu prayer “sounds like gibberish.” A former candidate for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, he had earlier called Hinduism “demonic.”

Names might differ ~ in olden times, philanthropists did fed the poor and donated their assets for maintenance and continuance of rituals in Temples.

Most Temples possess land and other property ~ sadly, those managed by HR&CE are in no great shape.  In many places, they are unable to collect rent. and are apathetic.

One can see billboards kept in the Temples announcing the defaulters ~ alongside those who failed to pay, those who did nothing to collect mounting dues should also be held accountable.  If measly rents accumulate to lakhs of rupees – who is to blame !!

Here is another sad story -  that of Sri Sundara Raja Perumal at Virugambakkam – according to this report, instead of evicting those who have occupied, the management is contemplating collecting rent … Sad !!

சிறுவஞ்சூர்: இந்து சமய அறநிலையத் துறை அதிகாரிகளின் கண்காணிப்பு இல்லாததால், பழமை வாய்ந்த சிறுவஞ்சூர் திருவாலீஸ்வரர் கோவில் சிதிலமடைந்து வருகிறது. இதை சீரமைக்க வேண்டும் என, அப்பகுதிவாசிகள் கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளனர்.

படப்பையிலிருந்து, 8 கி.மீ., தொலைவில் சிறுவஞ்சூர் கிராமத்தில், இந்து சமய அறநிலையத் துறை கட்டுப்பாட்டில், பழமை வாய்ந்த திருவாலீஸ்வரர் கோவில் உள்ளது. இக்கோவிலின் கருவறை முழுவதும் கருங்கற்களால் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. இக்கோவிலுக்கு சொந்தமாக, 10 ஏக்கர் நிலங்களும் உள்ளன. அவ்வாறு இருப்பினும் இக்கோவில் கடந்த பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாக பராமரிப்பு இன்றியும்; பூஜைகளின்றியும் சீரழிந்து காணப்படுகிறது. இதை கண்காணித்து சீரமைக்க வேண்டிய, இந்து சமய அறநிலையத் துறை அதிகாரிகள், எவ்வித நடவடிக்கையும் எடுக்கவில்லை என, அப்பகுதிவாசிகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.

இதுகுறித்து, அப்பகுதிவாசிகள் கூறுகையில், 'கோவில் நிலத்தில் கிடைக்கும் வருவாய் மூலம் கோவிலை சீரமைத்தால் போதும். இதை எந்த கோவில் நிர்வாக அதிகாரிகளும் கடைபிடிப்பதில்லை' என்றனர்.
